A great way to establish a sense of community is to build a firepit. Common areas or other large community greenspaces are perfect places to begin. In new areas people can sometimes be shy about meeting their neighbors. Fire pits can act as impromptu party starters that can quickly rally everyone together for s’mores and other fun.

Most new developments have areas where large rocks have been cleared from lots to make way for homes and yards. Yard pros have used these same stones to build beautiful yards designs. Get a gang of neighbors together to lift some huge stones to make the perimeter of the pit.

Before you get started you will first need to find a large open area that is clear from anything that might catch flame from sparks. Areas free of trees, shrubs or flammable material can work well. Remove anything in the way of your future fire pit. Weed killer is applied to prevent grass from creeping up through the fire pit. You can then cover the sprayed area with gravel. Weed killer is typically used to keep grass and other vegetation from sprouting up if the fire pit isn’t used for awhile. You don’t want to get your fire pit removed for looking shabby from vegetation overgrowth.

Once you’ve laid your foundation of weed killer and gravel the fun part can begin with the placement of large stones. Stones from around the neighborhood will be placed around the fire pit. There is no magic formula just try to pick appropriately sized stones and place accordingly.

If you have sandstone in your area it can make an excellent choice. It might break easier than other rocks, but the color change from heat is interesting. This can be a fun conversation starter to break the ice for all of the new neighbors.

Setting up a fire pit in a common area of your new development can be a fun task for building community and creating impromptu gatherings and lasting memories for years.
